Sparkles in the Dark | Solution focused thoughts

Life can feel overwhelming, uncertain, or heavy at times.

In Solution-Focused practice, we don’t ignore that.

Instead, we gently explore what is already helping — even in small ways — and build from there towards change.

Family life during exams

Exam season rarely affects just the person sitting the exam. It often ripples through the whole household. Routines change, stress levels rise, and family members can find themselves walking a careful line between offering support and giving space. Instead of asking, "How do we get through this?" we might ask: What's already working, even a little? When has our family handled a stressful period well before? What strengths are we seeing in each other right now? What would tell us that we're supporting one another effectively? Exam season can bring moments of tension, forgotten chores, late-night revision sessions, and worries about results. Yet it can also reveal resilience, kindness, patience, and teamwork. Small actions often make the biggest difference: A cup of tea left beside a revision space. A quiet word of encouragement. Taking the dog for a walk together. Sharing a meal without talking about exams. Celebrating effort, not just outcomes. No family navigates exam season perfectly. There will be days when tempers are shorter and energy is lower. The goal isn't perfection; it's noticing the moments when things are going slightly better and building on them. As exams continue, perhaps take a moment to ask: "What is one thing our family is doing this week that we would like to keep doing?" The answer may be small, but small successes often become the foundations of bigger ones. "You can't stop the waves, but you can learn to surf." — Jon Kabat-Zinn During exam season, families are often doing exactly that—learning to ride the waves together. 🌟
